Multicultural Health Sites

General
  • EthnoMed
An interesting site from the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle which defines and explains cultural beliefs and issues which affect the health of many ethnic minorities who have settled in this country. It does not, however, provide health information in other languages.
  • Office of Minority Health
A health service provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It includes news of interest, searchable databases of organizations, programs and documents, funding resources, events and conferences and much more.

  • CHID Online, The Combined Health Information Database
A joint effort of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Health Resources and Services Administration, this site provides access to more than 100,000 health-related materials that have appeared in magazines, journals, newspapers, brochures, book chapters, and videotapes. Content is summarized in abstract form and is intended for both health care professionals and consumers. Although there is overlap here with other government health databases, there is much hard-to-find information also. Information in other languages can be found by using the language as a search term. Unfortunately searching by both subject and language does not provide reliable results.
  • EurasiaHealth
A project of the American International Health Alliance, this site provides health information for both the consumer and the professional in the languages of the former Soviet Union -- Eastern European, Baltic and Central Asian.
  • Family Health International
A non-profit organization "committed to helping women and men obtain access to safe, effective, and affordable family planning services and methods; to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); and to improving the health of women and children." It provides this information in English, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic.
  • Health Education Brochures in Multiple Languages
From the Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah, this site provides over 200 health education brochures in 24 different languages.
  • Health on the Net Foundation HONselect
This site is definitely geared toward the health professional and toward the professional health researcher. It provides integrated searching in English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese to Medline, but a knowledge of MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) and searching methods is a must.
  • Immunization Action Coalition
An organization whose mission is to "create, find, and distribute the most complete, up-to-date, and accurate supply and listing of immunization and hepatitis B resources available anywhere." The site does a good job of this, supplying immunization information in a variety of languages. It also provides news via a free e-mail service and an "Ask the Expert" feature.
  • Massachusetts Health Promotion Clearinghouse
This service of the non-profit Medical Foundation of Boston provides free information on patient education brochures and health promotion materials in multiple languages. Some are available in full text, and others are available to order.
  • Multilingual Glossary
This glossary, compiled by the Heymans Institute of Pharmacology Medical School in Belgium, provides translations for 1830 medical and clinical terms in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Danish.
  • MultiLingual-Health-Education.net
This site, from Canada's Multicultural Change in Health Services Delivery Project, offers health care professionals patient education materials in 12 languages. The site can be searched both by language and by subject.
