  • Citizens' Council on Health Care
    A non-profit consumer privacy advocacy group, this organization provides information on such issues as medical confidentiality strategies, government surveillance, immunization registries, government smart cards, and much more.
  • Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
    A public interest research center in Washington, DC established in 1994 to "focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values." The section on Medical Record Privacy is especially good.
  • Health Privacy Project
    The best site for information on health privacy, covering both state and federal legislation, analysis of late-breaking news, and links to patient rights groups, federal agencies, industry and provider groups and state resources. Sponsored by the Institute for Health Care Research and Policy.
  • HIPAAdvisory and Department of Health and Human Services HIPAA Site are two good sources to begin understanding the complex issues involved in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) which calls for standardization of electronic patient health, administrative and financial data; unique health identifiers for individuals, employers, health plans and health care providers; security standards protecting the confidentiality and integrity of individually identifiable health information, past, present or future.
