Originally intended by Congress for the purpose of taxation, the census is a marvelous resource for personal information in historical research. The first census consisted of six queries and the recording has been expanded every 10 years with each succeeding census. Information recorded by the census goes from simple enumeration of the head of each household to names, dates of birth, race, age, marital status, etc. for every individual. To protect the privacy of living individuals, the population schedules are confidential for 72 years; thus, the census of 1930 is the last one available. All census materials are kept on microfilm which can be printed for 15 cents a page.
