DESCRIPTION
The American Lung Association of New Jersey - The Christmas
Seal People - was founded in 1906 and is the state's first
voluntary health organization. The New Jersey group is affiliated
with the American Lung Association, which was organized in
1904 in Atlantic City. Originally founded to combat tuberculosis,
the Association and its medical section , the New Jersey
Thoracic Society, are dedicated to the prevention and control of
childhood an adult lung disease, including asthma, emphysema
and chronic bronchitis, and to the control of causal factors, such
as smoking, air pollution and occupational hazards. See

PROGRAMS
Freedom From Smoking Clinics: Seven-session program
utilizing group support and behavior modification techniques to
assist smokers to stop smoking. Clinics are held in a variety
of settings including community centers, hospitals, churches
and work sites.
Better Breathers Clubs: Professionally-run support groups for
individuals with C.O.P.D.(chronic obstuctive pulmonary
disease), emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis,
or lung cancer. Meetings are held at various health facilities in
the area; call for current locations and schedules.
Camp Superkids: Medically supervised summer camp for
children who have asthma.
Living with Asthma Nights: Adults and parents living with
asthma learn about the respiratory system, the effective use of
medications, and techniques for coping with the physical and
emotional aspects of asthma. In addition, Family Asthma
Support Groups offer parents and children the opportunity to
ask questions of speakers who are experts in their field, and to
share concerns with others who understand. A related
program, called Breathe Well, Live Well: An Asthma
Management Program for adults, is an innovative adult program
designed to reduce asthma-related illnesses and disabilities by
building knowledge and self-management skills.
Working Smoke-Free: 90-minute presentation designed to
help companies address employee concerns related to
establishing a smoke-free working environment.
Open Airways for Schools and Communities: A program of six
40-minutes group lessons for children with asthma, held during
the school day or at a time convenient for the community
agency. This program uses group discussion, stories, games
and role play to help students take part in the program.
