DESCRIPTION

Princeton Warriors, USA, participates in Dragon Boat Racing in

the United States and internationally, including Singapore, Hong

Kong, and Canada to raise awareness about breast cancer and

to encourage people diagnosed with breast cancer to live full and

active lives. Princeton Warriors is the 5th breast cancer survivor

team established in the United States. The program's purpose

is to renew self-esteem, establish camaraderie and to provide

medically-required exercise for breast cancer survivors through

dragon boat competition. Fitness level is not a factor.  In addition

to the breast cancer team, anyone is welcome who wishes to

experience dragon boating by joining the mixed men's and women's

teams, as well as young adults to paddle in the student team for

the dragon boat festival the 3rd week in September. Practices

are held on Lake Mercer, Mercer County Park, Saturday, Sunday and

Tuesday.

PROGRAMS

Training program directed toward avoiding lymph edema and

the musculoskeletal problems associated with unaccustomed

exercise following the prolonged cancer struggle.

Participation in area dragon boat races. A dragon boat is a large

canoe-type vessel. The USA standard uses the 40' boat with

20 paddles and weights about 600 lb. The crew sits two

abreast and includes a steer person and a drummer. Paddles

are capable of hitting the water between 80 to 100 times per

minute and finishing a 500m race in a little under 3 minutes.

There are many dragon boat teams in the New York-

Philadelphia region, with approximately 12 teams dedicated to

breast cancer survivors. Family members' interest spurred the

development of a mixed team of men, women and young adults.
