DESCRIPTION
The Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development
(CHPRD) empowers the Hispanic community in New Jersey
through inclusion in policy development by ensuring access to
services and programs. The CHPRD facilitates professional and
leadership development, emphasizes the richness and diversity
of the Latino culture, and supports programs through funding
collaborations with public and private entities.
PROGRAMS
Grants: CHPRD provides grant funding for programs designed
to address the economic, educational and social needs of New
Jersey's Hispanic community. Eligible nonprofit organizations
must apply online via DCA's System for Administering Grants
Electronically (SAGE) at www.nj.go./dca/sage
Technical Assistance and Referral: A program which helps
grantees of the CHPRD and private organizations increase their
capacity to serve the state's Hispanic residents. Call 609-984-
3223.
Hispanic Resource Library/Data Bank: A program which
provides pertinent information on the status of Latinos
nationally and more specifically New Jersey. The CHPRD has a
resource library, and a central repository for Latino data for the
primary purpose of advocacy and policy recommendations, as
well as to provide public education. Call 609-984-3223.
Internships for Hispanic Students: The Hispanic Interns in
Community Service Program and Latino Leaders in Fellowship
Institute, a 10-week summer program geared toward
leadership and professional development, offer quality
internship experiences for Hispanic college students, placing
them in a government, corporate or nonprofit work
environment for four days a week. One day each week students
participate in leadership training conducted by Rutgers
University's Center for Strategic Urban Community Leadership.
Criteria for applying students and potential employers may be
found on the CHPRD website:
http://www.state.nj.us/dca/chprd/aboutthechprd.shtml
Scholarships: Interns who have successfully participated in a
placement site and have completed the Leadership Institute can
compete for scholarships awarded by PSE&G and the
Foundation for the Center for Hispanic Policy. Scholarships
cover tuition for the fall and spring semesters immediately
following the internship program and are contingent upon
academic performance. Interns must maintain a 3.0 GPA and
demonstrate financial need.
