DESCRIPTION

Mercer Street Friends provides compassionate and practical

solutions to the problems of poverty and health in Mercer

County, New Jersey. A Quaker-affiliated, nonsectarian

organization, Mercer Street Friends promotes the values of

tolerance, equality of all people, social justice and nonviolent

resolution of conflict. It is dedicated to uplifting the community

by providing a range of social services that nurture self-worth,

independence, community and quality of life for children, young

people, adults and the elderly and disabled.

PROGRAMS

Hunger Response Services: Mercer Street Friends Food

Bank. Phyllis Stoolmacher, Director, 609-396-1506,

pstoolmacher@mercerstreetfriends.org. These include  food

distribution, nutrition education and advocacy.

Health Care Services: Mercer Street Friends Home Health Care.

Mary Jane Darbee, Administrator, 609-396-1507,

mdarbee@mercerstreetfriends.org. Health care services include

nursing,  rehabilitation,  physical, occupational, and speech

therapy,  registered dieticians,   and certified home health aids.

Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances accepted.

Children and Youth Services: Shannon Mason, Director, 609-989-7618,

smason@mercerstreetfriends.org. Children's programs include the Hamilton

Avenue Day Care Center for children aged infant through preschool, the

West State Street Abbott programs for preschool children aged 3 to 5, and

before- and after-school programs for school-aged children, as well as

the only after-school program for special needs students not attending

regular public schools. Youth programs include Back on Track, ages

8 to 17; Urban Gateway Enhancement Program, ages 16-21; Youth

Enrichment Program, ages 14 through 18; and Youth Counseling for youth

aged 14 through 18 and their families.


Parenting and Adult Services: Karen Hoppock, Director, 609-989-1395,

khoppock@mercerstreetfriends.org: This division includes Citywide Healthy

Families Program, Children's Futures/ Parent Child Center West, Family

Support and Reunification Program, TANF (temporary assistance for

needy families), Initiative for Parents, TANF Job Skills, Community Work Experience

Program, and Literacy and GED Preparation.
