DESCRIPTION

The government agency, administered by the New Jersey

Department of Community Affairs, which ensures the financial

stability of local government by channelling federal and state

funds to municipalities and and providing supervision and

technical assistance to local and county governments to help

them operate more efficiently and effectively.

PROGRAMS

Bureau of Financial Regulation and Assistance:  Oversees the

review of the budgets and audits of all local units of

government, and ensures financial compliance with statutory

law.  Call 609-292-4806.

Bureau of Local Management Services:  Helps local

governments explore cost saving initiatives through

regionalization.  It answers questions about laws affecting local

government; provides assistance to towns looking to attract

new business through tax abatement programs, and oversees

aid programs that help defray the cost of local police and fire

programs.  Call 609-292-7842.

Bureau of Authority Regulation:  Oversees the more than 400

local authorities and fire districts in New Jersey and reviews their

budgets and audits.  It also oversees contracts awarded to

privatize the water supply, waste treatment or solid waste

disposal functions managed by local authorities.  Call 609-984-

Local Finance Board:  The government agency which is

responsible for ensuring the financial stability of local

government.  Municipal tax collectors, chief financial officers,

clerks and public works managers must be certified through a

rigorous academic and practical program that is run through

this agency.  It consists of 8 members who serve 5 year terms:

7 members appointed by the Governor with the advice and

consent of the Senate and the Director of the Division of Local

Government Services, who serves ex-officio.  Call 609-292-0479.
