DESCRIPTION

The government agency, administered by the New Jersey

Department of Community Affairs, which enforces the New

Jersey Uniform Construction Code, (including plumbing, fire

protection, electrical, mechanical, barrier free access, asbestos,

lead abatement and radon codes) and licenses and inspects

every structure in New Jersey, including homes, apartment

houses, workplaces, hotels, theaters, playgrounds, etc.  The

Division also provides homeowner protection services and

information on landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities.

PROGRAMS

Construction Code Element:  The office which is responsible

for making and enforcing the building codes in New Jersey.  The

Uniform Construction Code not only sets standards for how

buildings will be constructed, but also for elevator safety,

asbestos removal, accessibility for the disabled and radon

safety.  This office also licenses the individuals who review

building plans and inspect construction work, protects home

buyers through the state's mandatory 10 year new home

warranty program, and protects the consumer rights of families

who buy condominiums or cooperatives in New Jersey.  The

Element is also responsible for the inspection of all carnival and

amusement rides and ski lifts, and for the compliance safety

checks of liquefied petroleum gas installations in the state of

New Jersey.  Call 609-984-7607.

Inspections and Licensing Element:  The office has the

responsibility for ensuring that people who live in apartments

or rooming or boarding houses, and those who visit hotels or

motels in the state do so knowing that their room or home will

be maintained properly and safely.  Through a corps of state

inspectors, or through municipal inspectors acting at the

direction of this office, multi-family inspections are carried out

both cyclically, and in response to local complaints.
