DESCRIPTION
D&R Greenway Land Trust is one of central New Jersey's non-
profit land preservation organizations, dedicated to the
protection of our remaining natural areas. Originally named
Delaware & Raritan Greenway, the name was changed in 2004 to
reflect its preservation work as a Land Trust . The expanded
operating region includes Burlington, Hunterdon, Mercer,
Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties, and Salem
County. D&R Greenway Land Trust's mission is to structure
preservation solutions that benefit both the landowner and the
community and to secure the necessary public and private
funding. It manages lands it owns to enhance their conservation
value and provide appropriate public use. It monitors privately-
held land protected by conservation easement. The easements
allow for limited public access which allows for trail linkages
between adjacent preserved lands. As of April, 2008, 10,417.7
acres have been protected consisting of 190 properties valued
at $256,003, 012. During 2007, 20 properties were protected.
D&R Greenway works with landowners to protect, and provide
stewardship for, critical natural resources, open space and
remaining rural sectionsr of central New Jersey. Land protection
techniques are tailored to meet landowners' unique goals and
circumstances. These include conservation easements, fee
purchase, and partner facilitations. Some landowners provide
bargain sales, donations, charitable trusts or bequests. D&R
Greenway partners with the state, counties, municipalities and
grassroots organizations to leverage available funds and
protect natural lands, farmlands and open space.
Technical Assistance: D&R Greenway Land Trust provides
technical assistance to citizen groups and municipalities in
creating local greenways in 7 counties and 23 local communities.
A vital component of its mission is to provide education and
promote awareness about the need to preserve land
appropriately, how to conduct transactions, and how to be
good stewards of the land.
Johnson Education Center: Opened spring, 2006 in Princeton. It
provides hands-on education and technical assistance to local
governments, grassroots organizations and professionals, and
state, county and nonprofit partners to protect and effectively
manage land. The Center hosts many events, including lectures
and art exhibitions open to the community. The public is invited
to visit the Center on business days, and to enjoy the trails
which thread the 60 acres of Greenway Meadows Park at any
time. For more information, visit the website: www.drgreenway.org
Fundraisers: Celebrate Open Space! June 14, 2008; annual
dinner dance and Acre Auction at the Johnson Education Center.
Landowner Stewardship Forum: annual fall event with the
purpose of connecting outside specialists and landowners in
order to educate landowners on stewardship issues and
management practices that can be utilized on private lands.
