PROGRAMS

Newborn Screening Educational Initiative:  Develops and

distributes educational resources on enhanced newborn blood

and hearing screenings for parents and health care

professionals. The goal is to prevent mental retardation and

other serious medical or learning problems caused by certain

inborn diseases through increased awareness and promotion of

timely interventions.  Funding for this project is provided by

the March of Dimes - NJ Chapter, NJ Dept. of Health and Senior

Services, and the NJ Dept. of Human Services Office of

Prevention for Mental Retardation and +Developmental

Disabilities.

Access to Primary Care in New Jersey: Study investigating

geographic variation of avoidable hospitalizations for certain

conditions, identifying areas with highest hospitalization rates

and determining access-related systemic issues and local

barriers in each area: A research program to improve access of

medically indigent and uninsured populations to primary care

throughout New Jersey.

Covering Kids and Families- New Jersey Health Access Initiative

for Low Income Uninsured Populations:  The project works to

maximize enrollment of eligible, uninsured children in public

healthcare coverage programs (Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare)

through outreach, simplification and coordination activities

conducted at the statewide level and through four local

community pilots. It is part of a national program with the

ultimate goal of reducing the number of children lacking health

insurance coverage.

Comparing Clinical Outcomes: An annual report providing actual

and risk-adjusted predicted rates on six quality indicators for 3

to 5 years of data, using hospital discharges. The goal is to

support hospitals in their voluntary and mandatory outcomes

measure reporting, and to assist them to improve the quality

of care.

Patient Race and Ethnicity - Improving Hospital Reporting:

Studies hospital practices of collecting and coding data on

patient race and ethnicity and develops educational

interventions to address the needs. At two-year project funded

by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with a goal of

accurate and reliable data reporting, assessment of

needs/disparities in care and development of programs to address these needs.

Breast Cancer Awareness Project - provides information about

screening servies and facilities throughout New Jersey through

a comprehensive resource guide, highlighting those that

provide services for low-income and high-risk populations free

or at reduced fees, are available evenings and weekends, and

offer culturally sensitive and handicapped-accessible services.

The goal is to improve women's access to early detection

services through more referrals by primary care providers.
