DESCRIPTION

A private non-operating family foundation created in 1963 by J.

Seward Johnson, Sr. as a way of furthering his charitable

interests. It is recognized as a not-for-profit organization

under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Upon Mr.

Johnson's death, management and control of the organization

were turned over to J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The Atlantic

Foundation is a grant-giving organization that is free to decide

what charitable organizations to support. It does not directly

participate in charitable activity, although it provides technical

and administrative support to the Johnson Family of

Foundations, including the Sculpture Foundation, the Johnson

Art and Education Foundation, and Eyebeam Atelier. Previous

support enabled the creation of the Grounds for Sculpture and

Harbor Branch Oceanic Institute, as well as funding for many

scientific research projects. The Foundation continues to provide

considerable financial support to many of these organizations in

the form of grants or loans. It encourages the organizations to

develop external sources of funding so that they may pursue

their charitable missions independent of the Atlantic Foundation.

The Atlantic Foundation provides funding to pre-selected

organizations only. Applications are not accepted.
