DESCRIPTION
NAMI is a nonprofit, grassroots, family organization devoted to
supporting and improving the overall quality of life for people
with mental illnesses and their families. Goals are empowerment
of people with mental illness and their families; mutual support,
so that no person affected by mental illness goes through the
experience alone; and transformation of the community and the
mental health system so that people with mental illness and
their families can realize their full potential.
PROGRAMS
Professionally Developed Family Education Courses: Family to
Family is a 12-week course for relatives of an adult with mental
illness. Visions for Tomorrow is an 8-week course for parents
and caregivers of children with mental illness. Courses are
taught by NAMI family members who have participated in
intensive training. Courses are given each fall and spring.
Support Groups: for mental health consumers and their
families, led by trained facilitators who share the same
circumstances as people in the groups. NAMI C.A.R.E.S.Kids
support group for parents of children with brain disorders; call
the NAMI office for time and location); NAMI/IFSS Support
Group for relatives of adults with mental illness meets
MONDAYS 5:30 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the Lawrence Road
Presbyterian Church, Lawrenceville; NAMI/IFSS Suport Group
for relatives of young adults with mental illness meets
TUESDAYS 5:30 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the NAMI Mercer Office;
NAMI CARE for adults with mental illness meets the 2nd and
3rd MONDAY of the month, 6:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the NAMI
office; JUST FRIENDS is a social network operated by and for
adults with mental illness, whose families are members of NAMI.
Community Education: In Our Own Voice helps people
recovering from mental illness to fight stigma through public
presentations describing their own experience of illness and
recovery. This program educates, empowers and inspires
mental health consumers, families and the general public. The
NAMI Speakers Bureau presents information about mental
illness, treatment and recovery before businesses and
community groups. Monthly Education Meetings present
information to help families understand and cope with mental
illness (3rd TUES of each month, 7:30 P.M.-9:00 P.M. at the
Mercer NAMI office.
