DESCRIPTION
A government agency, administered by the New Jersey
Department of Human Services, which provides services,
information, referral, advocacy and publications to assist the
deaf, late deafened, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind and their
families to assure them equal access and opportunity.
PROGRAMS
Statewide Communication Access Referral Program: Provides
qualified sign language interpreters, and information/referrals
for assistive listening equipment and captioning services to
provide communication access for people who are deaf and
hard of hearing.
Information and Referral Hotline: The division serves as a
primary source in New Jersey for information and referral on
topics relating to deafness and hearing loss through its hotline
and webmaster.
Newsletter: DDHH publishes a newsletter called "The Monthly
Communicator". It is an important source of information for
people throughout New Jersey who are deaf and hard of
hearing and includes information about cultural and social
events and educational and employment opportunities.
Equipment Distribution Program: Since 1993, the Division of
Deaf and Hard of Hearing has distributed assistive technology
to qualified deaf, late-deafened, hard of hearing and deaf-blind
New Jersey residents, as well as those with serious speech
impediments.
Assistive Demonstration Centers: Demonstration centers
display a host of assistive devices for people with hearing loss.
The centers also offer hands-on demonstrations so that
consumers can make informed decisions when obtaining such
devices.
