DESCRIPTION
A state government agency that is responsible for higher
education planning, policy development coordination, and
program administration in New Jersey. It replaces the New
Jersey Board/Department of Higher Education, which was
abolished 6/30/94. See separate entry for the Higher Education
Student Assistance Authority, which is now a separate entity.
PROGRAMS
Educational Opportunity Fund: provides financial assistance
and academic support for disadvantaged (college) students;
students receive financial aid grants, and institutions receive
funding for support services for these students.
College Bound Grant Program: provides grants to colleges and
universities for programs for at-risk students in grades 6
through 12 in special needs school districts.
New Jersey State GEAR UP Project: a federally funded program that extends the
reach of College Bound.
Education of Language Minority Students Grant Program:
provides grants to colleges and universities for programs for
language minority college students.
Special Needs Grant Program: provides grants to colleges and
universities for regional centers that furnish services for visually
impaired, hearing impaired, or learning disabled college
students.
