DESCRIPTION

A state government agency, administered by the New Jersey

Department of Community Affairs, which oversees programs,

provides grants and technical assistance, supports statewide

information hotlines, and promotes legislation which advances

women's socioeconomic status and legal rights.  It is advised by

the Advisory Commission on the Status of Women, an eleven

member commission appointed by the governor which advises

the Division on Women.

PROGRAMS

Urban Women's Centers/Hispanic Women's Resource Centers:

Centers located in most New Jersey counties which provide

education, job training, ESL, and supportive counseling to

urban and Hispanic women.  Call 609-292-8840.

Displaced Homemaker Programs:  Programs in NJ which offer

education, job training and supportive counseling and other

services to enable displaced homemakers, including women

previously dependent on a family member's income, and women

 formerly on public assistance, to become financially

independent. Call 609-292-8840.

Office on the Prevention of Violence Against Women:  A

program which focuses not only on violence against women in

the home, but also sexual assault, sexual harassment and

other issues.  It provides training and public awareness

programs about violence against women and also addresses the

 more complex issue of the social and socialization forces that

promote violence against women.  As of 7/1/96, this office is

responsible for supervising grants to 20 rape crisis centers and

two rape crisis projects around the state.  Call 800-572-SAFE (7233).

Advisory Councils: 1) New Jersey Advisory Council on the

Status of Women:  The government organization which advises

the Director of the Division on Women.  It consists of 11

members, who serve 3 year terms, appointed by the Governor

with the advice and consent of the Senate.  For additional

information call 609-292-8840 2)  Advisory Council on

Domestic Violence:  The government organization which

advises DYFS (Division of Youth and Family Services) and the

Division on Women on the needs, priorities, programs and

policies necessary to combat domestic violence.  It consists of

19 members:  13 appointed by the Governor and 6 ex-officio--

the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Education, and the

Directors of the Division on Women, DYFS, Division of Family

Development and Administrative Office of the Courts.


Assistance to Spouses of Deployed Military Personnel: provided

to spouses of deployed active duty, reserve and National

Guard personnel through direct financial assistance payments

and/or referrals to existing program services. This program is

an emergency measure to alleviate financial and emotional

stress to spouses due to the deployment. For additional

New Jersey Women's Micro-Business Credit Program: a

collaborative economic development program implemented by

DCA's Division on Women and New Jersey Redevelopment

Authority (NJRA), a DCA affiliate. The program helps women

with minimal business experience become successful

entrepreneurs. Participants learn how to start, market or

expand their small business, as well as increasing their

business skills through training and mentoring opportunities.
