DESCRIPTION

NJPIES is a non-profit organization which provides statewide

services to the residents of New Jersey for poison exposures

and general poison and drug information. All poison center

services are free and confidential. Services include: Hotline (1-

800-222-1222), Public Education, Professional Education and Surveillance.

PROGRAMS

Hotline: 1-800-222-1222 - Provides free poison consultation

and drug information through its Poison Help Hotline. Callers

reach specially trained health care professionals - nurses,

pharmacists and doctors - who help with poison emergencies,

or provide drug/medication information. The service is available

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Help

Hotline is available for the hearing impaired through TTD/TTY

service. A language service is available for non-English-speaking residents.

Public Education: Through education, NJPIES works to provide

NJ residents with the information necessary to carry out

poison-safe practices in workplaces, homes and communities.

Efforts include assessing community needs, planning and

implementing effective programs targeting a wide range of

ages, professions and communities, in addition to evaluation.

NJPIES also develops and distributes free educational materials

throughout the state.

Professional Education: Educational programs are offered for

licensed health care professionals, residents in training, and

students. Programs are provided by a professional staff on site

at the poison center, as well as at universities and health care

facilities throughout New Jersey.

Surveillance: As a safeguard in instances of food poisoning,

adverse drug or product reactions, or drug tampering, NJPIES

notifies local and state agencies, the media and the public of

potential health threats. Data collected, analyzed and dispensed

for the development and implementation of poison prevention

and awareness strategies is used to educate residents, health

professionals and the media.
