DESCRIPTION

The New Jersey government agency which is responsible for

overseeing hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities in

the state, for administering state and federal financial

assistance to hospitals, county and local health departments,

and community health agencies. It responds to health

emergencies, administers a wide range of programs and

services, plans for future health needs, and monitors the health

of New Jersey citizens.

PROGRAMS

The following divisions have separate Community Resource File

entries: HIV/AIDS Services; Addiction Services; Epidemiology,

Environmental and Occupational Health; Communicable Disease;

Aging and Community Service; Family Health Services; Health

Facilities Evaluation and Licensing; Senior Benefits and

Utilization Management, Support Services Program.

Division of Management and Administration:  This division

includes the Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration which is

responsible for receiving, recording, amending, and maintaining

certificates of New Jersey births, marriages, civil unions, domestic

partnerships and deaths. Citizens can obtain certified copies of

certificates from the local registrar's office in the municipality

where the event occurred, or from the State Bureau. For more

Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS):  Works to develop

and maintain an integrated system of emergency medical care in

New Jersey and through statewide planning and oversight of

various components of the EMS system. Karen Halupke,

Division of Public Health and Environmental Laboratories:  This

division includes:  Clinical Laboratory Improvement Services

which licenses and inspects all clinical laboratories and blood

banks for compliance with federal and state quality standards.

and Chemical Laboratory Services which does biochemical and

environmental testing on New Jersey's water and soil for more

than 250 potential contaminants, including radiochemistry, and

serves as the state's Primary Water Testing Lab for the

Department of Environmental Protection Agency. (Stephen

Services which provides testing in virology bacteriology,

mycobacteriology, inborn errors of metabolism and biodefense

preparedness and molecular testing. (Dr. Evan Cadoff, Director,

609-292-0488); and Laboratory Outreach and Training, which

provides technical training to the state's sentinel hospital

New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research: Created to

encourage and promote significant, original research projects in

New Jersey through the funding of approved research projects

at qualifying institutions in the state. In addition, the

Commission will establish and maintain, in conjuction with the

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, a central

registry of all persons who sustain spinal cord injuries. Eleven

public members serve on the commission, including the

Commissioner of Health and Senior Services or designee who
