DESCRIPTION

A community-supported environmental organization whose

mission is to enhance the quality of the natural environment in

the area drained by the Stony Brook and the Millstone River.

Addressed are key issues affecting water quality and land use,

education of area residents about the ecology of the natural

environment and preservation of open space by maintaining an

860-acre nature reserve.

PROGRAMS

Buttinger Nature Education Center:  Education facility hosting a

nature library, interactive computer displays, classroom, Stony

Brook Gallery with juried art exhibits open to the public and

the Nature Shop, which sells natural history and environmental

books and nature gifts for all ages. 609-737-7592.

Environmental Education Program:  Year-round offering of

courses, workshops, field trips and lectures for teachers,

students, school classes and adults; conducted at schools, on

the reserve and at other sites in the area.  Includes pre-school

RATs, CATs, & BATs-- Volunteer-Based Comprehensive Water

Quality Monitoring Program:  Program which utilizes RATs (River

Action Teams),to make visual assessments of waterways and

meet regularly to discuss local issues; CATs (Chemical

Assessment Teams), to test water quality at sites around the

region every other Sat.; BATs (Biological Assessment Teams),

to take quarterly biological samples and catalog their findings;

and Action Teams, to work on stream bank restoration and

Summer Environmental Education Day Camp:  Camp providing

area children grades 1-9 the opportunity to explore nature and

develop their naturalist skills. One- and two-week sessions

offered in July and August.  Call 609-737-7592.

Literature and the Environment:  Reading course which offers

discussion of the best in nature writings and books.  Fees for

each series:  $25 members; $35 non-members.  Call 609-737-
