DESCRIPTION
A private, non-profit educational day school serving learning-
different students in grades pre-K through college preparatory
levels. It provides a structured learning environment for
students who may struggle with language-based learning
difficulties related to dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and
auditory processing. Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading and
research-based, multisensory speech-language instruction are
offered to students at all levels. The Lewis Clinic for Educational
Therapy, rooted in the science of learning, administers
nationally-normed standard tests and uses a selection of
diagnostic and perceptual instruments administered without
influence of pre-determined biases or prior diagnostic opinions.
PROGRAMS
The Lewis Diagnostic Clinic: Organization providing
independent diagnostic educational evaluation, testing,
counseling, educational planning, research, teacher training and
parent education.
Afternoon Education Program: One-to-one and small group
multisensory learning through visual, auditory, kinesthetic and
tactile modalities (VAKT). Methods of instruction include Orton-
Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Linda-Mood Bell, Lewis and
auditory processing perspectives. Teaching approaches depend
on each student's individual need. Specialized speech-
language and auditory training is available through the Speech
Department's afternoon SOAR program. Advanced tutorials are
also available for students who have special talent or interest
in specific areas of study.
Speech and Language Program: Ongoing assessments by
appointment, offered in the areas of auditory processing, oral
motor development, articulation, language processing, receptive
language skills, expressive language skills, voice, fluency and
pragmatics. Indivdual and small group therapy sessions are
offered to address the above needs. Call for appointment.
Interactive Metronome: A 13-month program offered 3 times a
week. The interactive metronome uses auditory, visual and
motor responses in order to change brain patterns necessary
for learning. It has been shown to be successful for individuals
with attention deficit disorder, auditory processing difficulties
and learning differences by improving attention and
concentration, motor control and coordination, cognitive
processing, reading and math fluency and control of aggression
and impulsivitiy. Availability is limited to six children; dates to be announced.
Social Skills Group: A 4-week program, meeting for 45 minutes
once a week, the group deals with a different age- and level-appropriate topic
each week. Objectives are to build self- esteem, self-control
and conflict management skills in order to
build positive peer relationships. The goal is developing
proficiency in interpreting non-verbal and verbal
communications, developing appropriate social strategies
through discussion and role play. Dates to be announced.
Kaufman Oral Motor Therapy Groups: Targets students with
low tone and articulation difficulties due to poor oral motor
control and motor planning difficulties. This will be implemented
for children with low oral motor tone and apraxia.
