HELP! I can’t log into my online account!

Our new website launched in March 2012, and with it came a new online catalog, powered by BiblioCommons. If you activate your BiblioCommons online account, you can renew items, place holds, create and share personalized reading lists, and much more, all from the comfort of your home computer or mobile device. I will be writing a series of posts exploring the different things that you can do in your online account. The first post in the series will explain how to activate your online account with BiblioCommons. 

In order to take advantage of any of the actions that I’ve described above, you need to register with BiblioCommons. Even though you have a library card and account here at the library, you will need to register your information in BiblioCommons in order to access your information online at home.  

“But I’ve been using my online account for ages, surely I don’t have to register,” you may be saying to yourself.  You will also need to register even if you previously utilized our Classic Catalog prior to March 2012.  

Registering in BiblioCommons is actually very simple. The first time you log in, you will be asked to provide a 14 digit barcode and a pin number. The 14 digit barcode can be found on the back of your card (leave out the spaces), and your pin was automatically set as the last four digits of the phone number we have on file for you.You may change your pin once you have registered. Click on the red “Log In” button. If you try entering this information into the log in page, and you are still having trouble, the Lending Services department can help you at ext. 210 or 272.

Once you have logged in, you will be asked a few one-time-only questions to set up your account. Your name will be displayed on the screen and you will be asked to enter your birthday because children under 13 have certain restrictions. If you do not want to enter your birthday, you can simply put in something like January 1900.   Click on the “Continue” button.

On the next screen you will be asked to create a username. Once you create your username, both the name and the barcode will work interchangeably, so you don’t have to memorize that long barcode! That’s good news for those of us who aren’t good with numbers. Alternatively, you may still use the barcode, if you prefer to do so. The username can be anything you would like, provided that it is not already in use in the BiblioCommons system.  It is possible to use your own name as a username, buty remember thatBiblioCommons is linked with other libraries. This means that even though you may be the only Joe or Jane Blogs at Princeton Public Library, you may not be the only one in the wider BiblioCommons system. Usernames must be letters, numbers, or underscores ("_") only, but they cannot be all numbers. Use the "check availability" button to see if yours is available.  If you are having trouble creating a unique username, we suggest using part of your email address.

On this screen you will also need to enter your email address.  Here, you can also enable “Recently Returned.”   The library does not keep records of past borrowing. However, when enabling the “Recently Returned” feature, the BiblioCommons system will gather a list of the titles you borrow. This information is visible only to you. 

Agree to the terms of use by checking the box, and then click on the“Register" button.

Your account is now active and you can begin using all the features of BiblioCommons!
