Financing
The total cost of the new library was $18 million.
Princeton Borough provided $1.92 million and Princeton
Township provided $4.08 million. The Princeton Public
Library Foundation raised $10.3 million during its
Community Cornerstone Campaign. The State of New Jersey
provided $2,199,190 from it Public Library Construction
Grant Bond Fund. The U.S. Institute of Museum and
Library Services (IMLS) provided $100,000 to support
technology.
Size
The new library comprises 58,000 square feet on three
floors for public use plus a 4,000 square foot mechanical
penthouse on the fourth floor.
Site
The new library is on the corner of Witherspoon and
Wiggins Street in Princeton Borough, on the site of
the previous library. It is adjacent to the Borough’s
new 500 car parking garage, 22 unit apartment/retail
complex and the new public plaza.
Staff
Seventy staff are employed by the library, that is the
equivalent of 51 full time employees.
Books and Other Library Materials
The new library has the capacity for 175,000 books
and other library materials, compared to 85,000 in
the old library. The library loans more than 430,000
items each year.
Technology
The new library provides more than 100 public computers.
The library subscribes to more than 25 databases to
meet their community’s information needs and
provides links to resources on the web.
For customers with laptops equipped with wireless
cards, the new library offers wireless access through
10 ports that provide hot spots throughout the building
and into the plaza. In addition, laptop users can
plug into data ports situated throughout the building.
Express Check Out
The new library features Express Check Out kiosks where
customers can check out their own materials using
an advanced touch screen checkout system based on
RFID technology.
