The demise of magazines has been predicted for quite some time. So why don’t they go away? Why hasn’t the availability of the same content on the internet made them disappear?

I think for the same reason that TV was not the end of radio. Just because someone has a TV doesn’t mean that she doesn’t listen to the radio. In fact, it now seems silly that anyone ever thought TV would end radio—they are two such different media, with two such different purposes. The same is true of print magazines and internet content. Each has something to offer the person who wishes to be informed or entertained. Also, success is about advertising, and magazines (the successful ones) have been able to point their advertising effectively to niche markets.

But whatever the reason, a glossy, colorful magazine is just plain irresistible. A glimpse into our magazine area, where there are approximately 300 glossy colorful magazines, is enough to understand why they are scattered all over the library by closing time.

Our magazines run the gamut. Take a look:

I am in awe of their accomplishments—the focus, dedication and skill are truly remarkable. Here at Princeton Public Library, several Olympic rowers regularly use our facility, so I am even more over-the-top excited that ever before. Despite the politics, the pollution, and the ethical questions surrounding the games—I have Olympic Fever!

During the last Olympics, I participated in the 'Knitting Olympics'.<img alt="knittingolympics-1.jpg" src="http://www.princetonlibrary.org/librarylounge/knittingolympics-1.jpg" width="95" height="59" /align="right" / hspace="10"> This was a 'competition' promoted by the Yarn Harlot, in which you cast-on a knitting project during the opening ceremonies and complete it by the closing event. I chose an ambitious sweater with an intricate cable pattern. I did well until around day 14, when I noticed a mistake about 50 rows back—that was it, my agony of defeat. I was crushed—I could not meet Olympic standards while sitting on my couch. I vowed I would return.

Two years later (yes, I can compete in both the Winter and Summer games...I mean come on, my Olympic glory is all my own!), I am ready to push myself even further. Yes, after hours of training, planning, and strategy sessions, I am about to embark on my first Triathlon!

Ok, I will admit it—I am a librarian, not an athlete. Therefore, my Triathlon will have no running, no swimming and minimal biking.

<img alt="team%20of%20rivals.jpg" src="http://www.princetonlibrary.org/librarylounge/team%20of%20rivals.jpg" width="100" height="147" /align="right" / hspace="10">Here is my plan—starting August 8, I pledge:
<img alt="knitting%20new%20scarves.jpg" src="http://www.princetonlibrary.org/librarylounge/knitting%20new%20scarves.jpg" width="93" height="110" /align="left" / hspace="10">1.  Knit the Drifting Pleats scarf from "Knitting new scarves : 27 distinctly modern designs" by Lynne Barr (New Non-Fiction, Non-F 746.432 Bar);
2. Read 'Team of Rivals', by Doris Kearns Goodwin (Book Group Collection, Non-F 973.709 Goo).
3. Walk and/or Bike for 45 Minutes each day.

The scarf is a reasonable size project so that even with mistakes, I should be able to complete it. It uses techniques that are new to me and very challenging to give it that extra 'Olympic' feel.

'Team of Rivals' is a chunky non-fiction work that I have long wanted to read, but didn't feel I had the time. At 754 pages not including notes, I will need to read around 50 pages a day—challenging, but certainly possible. I have been wanting to increase my non-fiction reading and this is a good way to give myself a kick-start.

By far, the hardest part will be the physical exercise—I hate it, but hey this is the Olympics. I felt I should push myself physically (and lifting the big non-fiction book just did not seem enough). So if around August 22/23 you see a crazed woman wandering the streets of Princeton, yarn trailing behind her, nose stuck in a big book—fear not, it is just a case of Olympic Fever!

Coming across the film adaptation of Hard Times starring Alan Bates, which we have here at the library on DVD, reminded me that this was one of the few Dickens novels that I had never read.

The story starts with a young girl from a travelling circus being taken in and educated by wealthy merchant Thomas Gradgrind, who runs a school fashioned after his own idea of what education should be. The action takes place in “Coketown,” a fictional name for a very real type of industrial town in the mid 1850’s. The depiction of the town and the conditions of the workers is almost propaganda-like.

It is slow going at first, with much time spent portraying Mr. Gradgrind’s philosophy of education, but this is necessary, since this philosophy shapes the story and directly contributes to its outcome. But gradually, as with all Dickens’ novels, the characters and their interaction with each other take hold of the reader’s attention, and don’t let go. Now I’m looking forward to the DVD.

We kicked off summer reading programs on Monday June 16th with a fantastic show by Jim Murphy and The Pine Barons and on June 23rd we had a fascinating talk entitled “Mystery and Mayhem in the Garden” that was given by Rosemary Harris, a master gardener and author of Pushing Up Daisies. Earlier this week on June 30th we had a great turnout for the first film in the series, a screening of Across the Universe.

>This is the final entry in the nine volume Bernard Samson spy novel series. Samson is a British spy during the cold war who has as much trouble with the personnel and structure at MI6 as he has with Soviet spies. Not as good as the classic LeCarre series featuring George Smiley, nevertheless, they are quite entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed every entry in the series. The books are best read in order (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, London Match; Spy Hook, Spy Line, Spy Sinker; Faith, Hope, Charity). There is also a prequel, Winter, which is the story of Samson’s father, who was also in the intelligence business.

You will have reason to hope. This is an uncomplicated look at all the projects which are currently underway to reshape the way that the world creates and uses energy. Krupp, who is the president of the Environmental Defense Fund, is uniquely qualified to discuss these projects ranging from the new science which is evolving, the tiny seed companies working furiously to make these new processes workable and to the creative ways in which venture capital is raised. The book is documented in case the reader wishes to pursue the subject at greater depth.

"POSITIVELY SOARS…Who are these women, and can they please take over the world soon?"
- Nathan Lee, The New York Times

SISTERS IN LAW is a fascinating, often hilarious look at the work of one small courthouse in Cameroon where two women determined to change a village are making progress that could change the world. The toughminded state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Court President Beatrice Ntuba are working to help women in their Muslim village find the courage to fight often-difficult cases of abuse, despite pressures from family and their community to remain silent. With fierce compassion, they dispense wisdom, wisecracks and justice in fair measure—handing down stiff sentences to those convicted. A cross between Judge Judy and The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, SISTERS IN LAW has audiences cheering when justice is served.

SISTERS IN LAW has won many prizes at film festivals and most recently received a prestigious Peabody Award.

Summer reading programs aren't just for kids! Sign up at the Welcome Desk for Seeds of Change, Princeton Public Library's summer reading club for adults. The first 50 people to sign up will receive one of our popular red bags, in addition to a reading log and a package of seeds to get you started.

There's no pressure - you can read as little or as much as you'd like. Just record the titles on your reading log and hand it in by September 7th. Come on - judging on the number of items that circulate, we are sure you'll have no problem jotting down a book or two. Everyone who turns in a reading log will be entered to win one of several gas cards. You may also enter to win prizes if you attend our weekly Monday night programming!

Pick up your log, seeds, and visit our website for more details, suggested titles and a schedule of this summer's special Monday night programming! Don't forget to submit your book reviews to us at books@princetonlibrary.org or submit them directly to our online catalog (just make a note that it is a summer reading pick). We reserve the right to post them here, on Library Lounge. Let us know if you'd like to remain anonymous.
