Princeton Press, Sat., Dec. 27, 1890:

MOSES SCHENCK, one of the most widely-known colored men of Princeton, died this morning, aged 58 years, after a very brief illness, of pneumonia. He was a musician, and his services were in demand far and near at dancing parties in town and country. At these gatherings this winter, where "Mose" was wont to lead the music, his kindly voice and familiar face will be sorely missed. Mr. Schenck was very proud that he had been the first colored man to exercise the right of suffrage under the XVth Amendment. He voted at a Borough election two days only after the issuance of the proclamation declaring the amendmentment [sic] in force, being the first of his race to do so in Princeton.

His claim to be the first one who voted under the amendment was disputed by a resident of Amboy, who had voted on the preceding Saturday (the Princeton election was held on Monday), at a road election. Some months ago Mr. Schenck was injured by jumping from a midnight train at Princeton Junction, which had not stopped at the station, as it should have done for a passenger. Whether the injuries received then hastened his death we do not know, but he had been complaining of pains in his side very often since.
His funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon of next week, from his residence on Hulfish Street.

Princeton Press, Sat., Jan. 10, 1891:

At a special meeting of the survivors of Little's Cornet Band, of which MOSES SCHENCK was a faithful member, the following resolutions were adopted:
Whereas it has pleased Almighty God in His all wise Providence to remove from us our most worthy brother Moses Schenck, we humbly submit; and in gratitude to his widow and relatives we, as an association, sincerely sympathize with them in this their hour of bereavement; and be it further
Resolved, that we wear the badge of mourning 30 days.
Princeton Press, Sat., Jan. 10, 1891:

Moses Schenck had his life insured in three insurance companies on the weekly payment plan. His widow received $225.25 from the Prudential Company within four days after his death. The other policies were small.
ISRAEL SKILLMAN, Chairman.
AARON H. LAKE, Secretary.
