Princeton Press, Saturday, April 16, 1887: Van Tilburg was recently ordered off the farm owned by Miss Simmon's [sic] father, whence he had gone to pay a visit to Lizzie. He was arrested for trespass and the case was settled. Early on Tuesday evening Van Tilburg drove to the house of Simmons, and, attracting the attention of the girl, walked from her house to a lane near by, in which he had a buggy in waiting. She readily acquiesced in the proposition made to her by Van Tilburg that the two should get married, and returned to her home for her hat. She told her father of the offer made her and said she would go with her lover at once. The old man strongly objected, but his appeal was in vain. Lizzie ran to the lane and, springing into the buggy beside her white lover, was hastily driven away towards Princeton, where the ceremony was performed. The couple remained in the home of a colored family at Princeton Tuesday night and returned to Rocky Hill on Wednesday, remaining at Simmons' home. Van Tilburg, who is about twenty five years old, is considered insane, although in every other act of his life he appears to have acted with commendable judgment. Van Tilburg has since showed himself in the village and acknowledged the marriage. Somerville Gazette. | ||
