The Princeton Press, Sat., June 26, 1887: The closing exercises of the Witherspoon Street School were held in the school building on Friday, the 25 inst., at 2.30 o'clock P. M. The platform was tastefully decorated with flowers, and was occupied by the teachers, and several members of the Board of Education--Rev. J. T. Duffield, D.D., L. H. Anderson, Esq., and Mr. L. S. Atwater. Parents and friends of the pupils were also present and listened with interest to the following programme : Prayer ; Singing--"Welcome to Parents and Friends ;" Opening address, Thomas Schenck ; Recitations--"If you please," Hattie Shaw ; "A dream," Jennie Scudder ; Singing--"Chatterbox ;" Recitation--"On Alpine Heights," Frederick Jackson ; Reading--"School Closing Days," Mary E. Vansant ; Singing--"Summer is Here ;" Recitations--"A Psalm of Life," Edith Henry ; "Busy Children," Maud M. Voorhees ; Singing--"I am so Glad," led by infant class ; Recitations--"The Gypsy Fortune Teller," Annie M. Hubbard ; "The Cateract of Lodore," Maggie Vansant ; Singing--"Katydid ;" Recitations--"The hot Season," Martie Onque ; "Oh why should the spirit of mortal be proud?" Clara Schenck ; Singing--"Little Fairy ;" Recitation--"Mrs. Caudle urges the need of spring clothing," Katie J. Schenck ; Closing address--Carrie Sortor. Following which, L. H. Anderson, Esq., Secretary of the Board of Education, presented prizes, awarded by the Board, to Maggie Vansant, Martie Onque, Frederick Jackson, Lizzie Lake, Hattie Shaw, and Harry Johnson. In addition to the prizes awarded by the Board of Education, special prizes, for general excellence, were given by their respective teachers, to Katie Schenck, of the higher department, and to Annie M. Hubbard, of the intermediate department. There was one more presentation : Maud Voorhees, of the primary department, presented to her teacher, Mrs. Mary Scudder, a neat little volume of poetry, as a token of affectionate regard, and of high appreciation of her teacher's kindness to, and faithful labors with her. A brief and appropriate address by Dr. Duffield was followed by singing the "Parting hymn." The exercises were closed with the Benediction. Maggie Vansant presided at the organ. | ||||
