1884 School News

Princeton Press, Sat., June 28, 1884:

WITHERSPOON ST. SCHOOL.
--------
The Witherspoon Street School closed on Thursday morning with appropriate exercises held in the school building. The singing was an important feature. There were readings, recitations, an essay and a dialogue, followed by an oration, subject: "Proofs of a Designing Creator," by S. John Onque, the A class scholar of the higher department. He had placed on the blackboard a carefully drawn colored map of a section of the New England States, besides some Algebraic examples in quadratics and series. The awarding of the prizes was an event eagerly looked for. The first general prize had never been awarded in the school, but on this occasion there were two -- one to S. J. Onque and the other to Maggie Vansant. The announcement of these prizes was greeted with loud and genuine applause. Besides the usual prizes by the Board of Education, special prizes, by the teachers, were awarded to Maggie Clifton, Samuel Jackson and Lizzie Lake.
After some encouraging remarks by the Rev. W. D. Robeson the school was dismissed, and teachers, pupils, parents and friends all went to their homes well pleased with what had occurred.
