The Princeton Press, Sat., Feb. 23, 1884: Early Thursday evening, Mrs. Scudder, a colored woman, upwards of seventy years of age, residing on Cemetery street, was burned to death. Her clothing caught fire in some way; but whether from the stove, lamp, matches, or an improper use of kerosene, nobody seems to know. She expired shortly after taking fire. Her son in attempting to extinguish the flames was nearly suffocated and also badly burned. He has since died. The house and furniture escaped uninjured. |
