DESCRIPTION
The government agency, administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, which oversees and enforces the State Fire Safety Act, administers the New Jersey Fire Incident Reporting Program, and implements training and education for the Fire Service and the general public. It provides direct services such as research, training, technical assistance, inspection of State owned and leased buildings, and licensing of those enforcing the code. It is also responsible for gathering fire incident information and distributing free smoke detectors to needy households throughout New Jersey. The division is also responsible for conducting firefighter serious injury and death investigations.

PROGRAMS
Volunteer Emergency Services Organization Loan Program (VESO): A government program which provides low-interest loans to volunteer fire and emergency squad companies for vehicle or equipment purchases or building restoration

Fire Safety Commission: The government organization which assists and advises the Department of Community Affairs on fire safety related issues. It consists of 23 members: 2 from the Senate appointed by the Senate President, 2 from the General Assembly appointed by the Speaker of the General Assembly, 11 appointed jointly by the Senate President and the Speaker of the General Assembly, and 10 appointed by the Governor. Members of the legislature serve for their term of office and the others serve 5-year terms. Call 609-633-6070

Fire Safety Councils: Six councils established to assist the Fire Safety Commission on the following subjects: Uniform Fire Safety Act; Training and Education; Statistics; Master Planning; Public Education; and Firefighter Safety and Health. Call 609-633-6070

Fire Service Women of New Jersey: An organization comprised of female fire service personnel throughout the State of New Jersey which addresses issues unique and specific to women in fire service.
