DESCRIPTION
The government agency, administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, which enforces the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, (including plumbing, fire protection, electrical, mechanical, barrier free access, asbestos, lead abatement and radon codes) and licenses and inspects every structure in New Jersey, including homes, apartment houses, workplaces, hotels, theaters, playgrounds, etc. The Division also provides homeowner protection services and information on landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities.

PROGRAMS
Construction Code Element: The office which is responsible for making and enforcing the building codes in New Jersey. The Uniform Construction Code not only sets standards for how buildings will be constructed, but also for elevator safety, asbestos removal, accessibility for the disabled and radon safety. This office also licenses the individuals who review building plans and inspect construction work, protects home buyers through the state's mandatory 10 year new home warranty program, and protects the consumer rights of families who buy condominiums or cooperatives in New Jersey. The Element is also responsible for the inspection of all carnival and amusement rides and ski lifts, and for the compliance safety checks of liquefied petroleum gas installations in the state of New Jersey. Inspections and Licensing Element: The office has the responsibility for ensuring that people who live in apartments or rooming or boarding houses, and those who visit hotels or motels in the state do so knowing that their room or home will maintained properly and safely. Through a corps of state inspectors, or through municipal inspectors acting at the direction of this office, multi-family inspections are carried out both cyclically, and in response to local complaints.
