DESCRIPTION
D&R Greenway Land Trust is central New Jersey's non-profit land preservation organization, dedicated to the protection of our remaining natural areas. Originally named Delaware & Raritan Greenway, the name was changed in 2004 to reflect its preservation work as a Land Trust and to account for the expansion of interests beyhond the traditional focus along the Delaware & Raritan Canal. D&R Greenway Land Trust works to preserve permanently watershed lands and large-scale landscapes and to prevent loss of open space to development. Its operating region consists of more than 1,500 square miles, encompassing portions of the Delaware, Raritan and Millstone River watersheds and the Delaware & Raritan Canal. This includes all of Mercer County and parts of Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Burlington and Monmouth counties. There is a staff of 6 full-time and 6 part-time professionals
SERVICES
Preservation and protection of a permanent network of natural lands and open spaces, creating the conditions for a healthy and diverse environment to flourish
Providing the public with appropriate access to these areas, encouraging active lifestyles and a greater appreciation of the natural world
Inspiration of a conservation ethic promoting policies, educational programs and partnerships that result in a public commitment to land preservation
PROGRAMS
D&R Greenway works with landowners to protect critical natural resources, open space and remaining rural character of central New Jersey. Land protection techniques are tailored to meet the needs of the landowner's unique goals and circumstances. These include conservation easements, fee purchase, and partner facilitations. Some landowners provide bargain sales, donations, charitable trusts or bequests. D&R Greenway partners with the state, counties, municipalities and grassroots organizations to leverage available funds and protect natural lands.
D&R Greenway Land Trust provides technical assistance to citizen groups and municipalities in creating local greenways in sixd counties and 20 municipalities. It is a vital component of its mission to provide education and promote awareness about the need to preserve land appropriately, how to conduct transactions, and how to be good stewards of the land. The new Johnson Education Center will help take this goal a step further by providing adequate space and tools to create better conservation programs across the State of New Jersey (see www.drgreenway.org/jec.html for more information)
Effots to foster the development of trails and parks that enable individuals to enjoy the land which has been preserved. To ensure the accomplishment of these goals, two organizations have been created to which D&R Greenway provides administrative support and guidance: New Jersey Trails Association and Friends for the Marsh (see www.drgreenway.org/partner_links.html).
