A private, nonprofit affiliate of the New Jersey Hospital Association. HRET engages in research and educational activities which support healthcare organizations, and enhance their ability to provide accessible, affordable, quality care, and to promote wellness in their communities.

PROGRAMS
Newborn Screening Educational Initiative: Develops and distributes educational resources on enhanced newborn blood and hearing screenings for parents and health care professionals. The goal is to prevent mental retardation and other serious medical or learning problems caused by certain inborn diseases through increased awareness and promotion of timely interventions. Funding for this project is provided by the March of Dimes - NJ Chapter, NJ Dept. of Health and Senior Services, and the NJ Dept. of Human Services Office of Prevention for Mental Retardation and +Developmental Disabilities.
Community Benefit: Project assessing the extent of all community benefit activities of NJ hospitals.
Access to Primary Care in New Jersey: Study investigating geographic variation of avoidable hospitalizations for certain conditions, identifying areas with highest hospitalization rates and determining access-related systemic issues and local barriers in each area: A research program to improve access of medically indigent and uninsured populations to primary care throughout New Jersey.
Trustee Institute: Education and training for hospital trustees and other healthcare professionals.
Parenting Education and Child Abuse Prevention Program: A program that develops resources to educate parents and reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect.
Covering Kids and Families- New Jersey Health Access Initiative for Low Income Uninsured Populations: The project works to maximize enrollment of eligible, uninsured children in public healthcare coverage programs (Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare) through outreach, simplification and coordination activities conducted at the statewide level and through four local community pilots. It is part of a national program with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of children lacking health insurance coverage.
Covering Clinical Outcomes: An annual report providing actual and risk-adjusted predicted rates on six quality indicators for 3 to 5 years of data, using hospital discharges. The goal is to support hospitals in their voluntary and mandatory outcomes measure reporting, and to assist them to improve the quality of care.
Patient Race and Ethnicity - Improving Hospital Reporting: Studies hospital practices of collecting and coding data on patient race and ethnicity and develops educational interventions to address the needs. At two-year project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with a goal of accurate and reliable data reporting, assessment of needs/disparities in care and development of programs to address these needs.
Breast Cancer Awareness Project - provides information about screening servies and facilities throughout New Jersey through a comprehensive resource guide, highlighting those that provide services for low-income and high-risk populations free or at reduced fees, are available evenings and weekends, and offer culturally sensitive and handicapped-accessible services. The goal is to improve women's access to early detection services through more referrals by primary care providers.

PUBLICATIONS
Building Healthier Communities - This publication, compiled about every 5 years, provides a profile of the community's health in each of 21 counties through county-specific snapshots of population and health statistics not routinely found in a single source. County-level data and rates are compared to state averages for benchmarking. The profiles serve as a valuable reference and resource tool for hospital planners, community agencies and offices of public health.
EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES - A Guide to Breast Cancer Screening in New Jersey:- updated and more comprehensive breast cancer resource guide providing information on mammography providers and other breast health related services. Available in statewide and county-specific, in English and Spanish, and the Web at www.njha.com
Now What Do I Do? A Guide for Happy & Healthy Children, Parents and Caregivers: Provided to all new parents in New Jersey, the guide provides helpful tips, important information and resource numbers. Updated copies can be obtained from the Dept. of Human Services, 609-292-0888.
Shaping Healthier Tomorrows (newsletter): Published biannually. Each issue highlights a specific HRET research initiative and includes similar initiatives taking place throughout the state by our New Jersey hospitals. Circulation is approx. 1,700 health and non-health related professionals. Available on web site http://www.njha.com

Comparative Clinical Outcome Reports (produced annually):- risk-adjusted rates for C-sections and myocardial infarction mortality outcomes, released to NJ acute care member hospitals only
Outreach Toolkits for Hospitals: Encourages hospitals to actively help enrollment of eligible underinsured families in NJ Family Care. Includes samples of NJ Family Care resources and ideas for more hospital involvement.
Outreach Toolkits for Faith-Based Organizations: Includes samples of NJ FamilyCare resources and tips on how to get involved with identifying and assisting eligible underinsured families.
NJ FamilyCare Training Manual for Outreach Workers: a reference tool for outreach workers trained through the CK project, including NJFC information/policies and tips on successful outreach.
Educational/Awareness Video: a 5-minute informational video on NJ FamilyCare and importance of health care insurance. Distributed statewide to hospitals, clinics and other community access organizations that have contact with parents.
Directory of NJ FamilyCare Outreach and Application Assistance Sites. Available by state and county levels.
Access to Primary Care in New Jersey: Geographic Various of Hospitalizations for Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions in 1995 and 1997 Executive Summary; highlights findings of a research project that studied access to primary care at zip code level in NJ, using UB-92 hospital discharge data, population census and small area variation analysis.
Pharmacy Bag Insert: Describes the NJ FamilyCare program, and is very helpful for uninsured pharmacy customers paying out-of-pocket. The back of the insert has agency contact information for families
Small Business Fact Sheet: describes the NJ FamilyCare program for small business employees. Provides small business employers with ways to connect employees to free or low-cost public health insurace programs for their children
Physicians' Office NJ FamilyCare Informational Rack Card: describes the NJ FamilyCare program; particularly aimed at families with uninsured children in waiting areas such as physicians' offices.
A Guide to Using HMOs and "Managed Care" for NJ FamilyCare Enrollment: a brochure to introduce NJ FamilyCare enrollees to managed care services and help them navigate the system.

Patient Race and Ethnicity: Improving Hospital Data Collection and Reporting: A summary of findings using 1995 data as a baseline, examining the distribution of race and ethnicity for all patients hospitalized in New Jersey acute care hospitals and reflects dischange data from 1996 through 2002, specifically looking at improvements or changes.
