DESCRIPTION
A non-profit, non-sectarian national organization dedicated to helping cancer patients and their loved ones cope with the emotional, social, and financial burdens of cancer. Professional social workers provide direct services free of charge, which are complemented by programs of professional consultation and training, community education and awareness, social research, and public policy. * Relies on private contributions for its support.
*Also offers limited financial assistance for transportation to and from chemotherapy and-or radiation therapy, child care, pain medication, and home care.
SERVICES
Information and referral - Cancer patients and their loved ones
Counseling - Individual, family, group - Cancer patients, relatives and their loved ones
Counseling - Free telephone - Homebound cancer patients and their loved ones
Crisis intervention - Cancer patients and their loved ones
Financial assistance - Cancer patients and post-screening diagnostic testing-related costs for women suspected of having breast, cervical or ovarian cancers.
Self Help/support groups - In person and by telephone - Cancer patients and their loved ones
Public education/information - Workshops, seminars, conferences - General public, health care professionals, in person and over telephone (through teleconferencing).
PROGRAMS
Community Education Program: A program which provides seminars to the community on a variety of topics related to maintaining good health, dealing with the medical system, and adjusting to illness, cancer and loss. Free telephone programs available through teleconferencing.
Financial Assistance Program: A program which provides financial assistance for home care, child care, homemaker services, transportation to and from treatment and pain medication costs. Eligibility guidelines provided upon request.
Professional Education Program: A program which offers workshops and symposia to professionals in the cancer field on both the local and national level.
Pain Resource Center: A program which educates patients, families, health care professionals and the public about cancer pain; provides resource and referral information; works with Cancer Care social workers to counsel patients and families about pain; and conducts research into the pain-related experiences of patients and families.
Helping Children Cope: A program which provides emotional support and practical assistance to meet the needs of children as they face the impact of cancer on their lives. Also provides workshops for school professionals to help identify, understand and more effectively meet the needs of these students.
Adolescent Outreach Program: A program which provides emotional support and practical assistance to adolescents coping with cancer in their families. Also provides workshops for school professionals to help identify, understand and more effectively meet the needs of these students.
Older Adult Program: A program which provides emotional support and practical assistance to the elderly living with cancer. Also provides telephone support for the homebound, and workshops for patients and caregivers on cancer awareness and coping strategies.
Worksite Counseling & Consultation Service: A program which provides assistance to employers and employees in identifying and resolving the wide variety of problems and concerns that are created when cancer strikes.
