DESCRIPTION
A division of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services which is responsible for the recognition, identification, prevention, and control of illnesses that are caused by communicable diseases and by hazards in the environment and/or workplace.
PROGRAMS
OFFICES OF THE DIVISION
Occupational Health Services: This office provides an extensive surveillance system to identify high-risk worker populations including those with lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, and silica exposures, asbestos-related diseases, occupational asthma and fatal occupational injuries; and the enforcement of the health provisions of the New Jersey Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Act and the enforcement of public workplace and community provisions of the New Jersey Worker and Community Right to Know Act. These services are provided through several specific programs: Occupational Health Surveillance Program; Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Program; and Right to Know Program. Communicable Disease Service: This office provides technical support and consultation to local health departments and non-governmental health care providers and organizations, surveillance, education, training, outreach services, statistics on all reportable communicable diseases, health service grant funds, and medication. These services are provided through several specific programs: Infectious and Zoonotic Disease Program, Tuberculosis Control Program, Vaccine Preventable Disease Program and Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program. Cancer Epidemiology Services: Records the incidence of cancer in the state for use by policy makers, researchers and scientists to assess the impact of cancer, develop cancer control strategies and study cancer trends. New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research: The NJCCR facilitates the promotion and funding of research into the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer. The Commission administers a highly competitive grant and fellowship program, which relies upon systematic scientific peer review; it also sponsors educational programs for patients, scientists, health professionals and the public. Office of Cancer Control and Prevention: This Office is charged with implementation of the Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. Activities include conducting the first-ever statewide capacity/needs assessment of cancer-related activities, development of cancer control infrastructure. Center for Health Statistics (CHS): CHS analyzes and disseminates health data to internal and external requestors, including the general public. The Center's publications include annual reports of vital events, monthly fact sheets, and a series of data analyses entitled "Topics in Health Statistics." Major projects include the creation and maintenance of the State Health Assessment Data Query System, the management of New Jersey Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance, Central Nervous System injury surveillance, and CDD-funded violent fatality surveillance.
