The founder of the renowned Hollywood Film Institute, Dov has taught thousands, from industry pros like Quentin Tarantino to Guy Ritchie and Baz Luhrmann, celebrities like Will Smith, Sinbad, and Michael Jackson, to first-timers like Mark Archer, who for $25,000 produced In the Company of Men, which grossed over $20 million. Traveling the globe, Dov gives a famous two-day film course that has inspired countless professionals and amateurs to make their own independent movies. A former Green Beret, he fearlessly tells us all -- every industry secret he knows! Simple, pick it up and you'll actually understand how to make your first film...and that's the truth. George Lucas : interviews
Lucas, George, 1944-

A director, producer, and writer, George Lucas is the power behind "The Force." The son of a conservative small-town businessman, he grew up to become arguably the most identifiable and popular filmmaker in the history of the medium. Yet unlike his more publicly engaged contemporaries, Lucas rarely grants reporters an audience.

This first book of Lucas's interviews affords fans and students of film and science fiction a rare opportunity. Editor Sally Kline collects conversations from the reticent director spanning Lucas's entire career, from the making of his first film, 1971's THX-1138, through American Graffiti, the triumph of the Star Wars trilogy, and even a 1999 interview given while awaiting the release of Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace.

In interviews from venues such as Rolling Stone, Playboy, and American Film, Lucas reveals his distrust of the Hollywood establishment, his love for making movies, and his unambiguous values. Those values translate into the epic clash between good and evil created when he explores characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

Lucas revolutionized the movie industry and created the most successful film series of all time. Along with films by his close friend Steven Spielberg, Lucas's releases invented the notion of blockbuster movies. Before the end of the millennium, he could count the loyal fans of the Star Wars trilogy in the millions.

Japan has a wide range of unique, highly refined performing arts that have developed over the centuries. While there are many academic works discussing various genres, none provide practical information enabling one to enjoy theatre as it is performed today. A Guide to the Japanese Stage provides a brief history and introduction to the features of each genre, together with recommendations of plays that are fun to watch and accessible to non-Japanese audiences. Introductions to Kabuki, Bunraku, No, and Kyogen are designed to enable Western audiences to fully enjoy the spectacle they offer. A Guide to the Japanese Stage also introduces popular groups from alternative and mainstream Shogekijo including major companies that have performed abroad, such as Ninagawa's Shakespearean production that toured New York and London, Hideki Noda's NODA MAP group which performed in London for the first time this year, the all-women's Takarazuka troupe, and the avant-garde Butoh. Brief synopses are provided for approximately fifty selected plays, and well-known popular companies, actors, writers, and directors are introduced. The text is widely illustrated, and includes information about theater listings, how to get tickets, and which plays are available on DVD. A Guide to the Japanese Stage is an invaluable reference for anyone planning a visit to Japan who is keen to experience its theater firsthand, as well as students of Japanese theater and literature.

book jacket The happiest corpse I've ever seen : the last twenty-five years of the Broadway musical
Mordden, Ethan, 1947-
Check Availability
2004; viii, 312 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.
On the Night of August 25, 1980, the curtain fell on the premiere of a spectacular new Gower Champion musical, 42nd Street. David Merrick, the show's producer, stepped to the footlights and, amid clamorous applause, silenced the audience to announce that Champion had died just hours before the performance began. With gasps from the audience and tears from the ingenue, Wanda Richert, the era of the classic Broadway musical crashed to a resounding close at the Winter Garden Theatre. Big orchestras, real voices, recognizable books, and intelligent lyrics went out the window, and in came stupendous flops like Dance of the Vampires, Jekyll & Hyde, Thou Shalt Not, The Capeman, and Urban Cowboy. There were, though, notable shows that did, in different ways, succeed in invoking the spirit, if not the reality, of the Broadway musical: Rent, The Phantom of the Opera, the two Wild Partys, Sweet Smell of Success, The Producers, and stunning revivals of three classics -- Carousel, Cabaret, and Follies. Still, the true Broadway musical from the days of Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Merman, Preston, Channing, Fosse, and Robbins was finally dead. Unfortunately, the burial has not yet taken place. In The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen, Ethan Mordden takes the reader to the Broadway musical's wake and is unsparing in his acerbic and witty look at the condition of the corpse. Not content merely to spank the creators of some of these fiascos, Mordden also takes on the critics of our day and splays their bodies across The Great White Way like Sweeney Todd giving a close shave. For anyone who has read Mordden's earlier series of books on The Broadway Musical, this is the capstone or, should we say, "coffin nail." Once more, it's "Curtain going up!," but this time, instead of cheering, Ethan Mordden is throwing rutabagas. Book jacket.
