    Midlife media crisis

You’ve heard it before. A major monthly increase in the cable/Internet/phone bundle can contribute to serious contemplation over “just how much do I really need television?” The answer’s simple. Of course, no one needs television. I grew up in the seventies, lying on the couch watching entirely too much television. Everyone around me did, too. But, the hyper-technological environment of how we live today is an entirely new realm.

    Internet in outer space

NASA's Curiosity has now landed and begun beaming back pictures from the surface of Mars. But how exactly does the Internet work in outer space? Today I'll break down the publicly available details. We'll start with the Rover itself and work backwards from there.

  • Mixing up folk tunes

    Mixing up folk tunes

Woody Guthrie, famed American songwriter-raconteur, would have been 100 years old this July. Folk music revivalist Pete Seeger recently celebrated his ninety-third birthday. In an age where songwriters and singers had separate roles in the music industry, these elder statesmen of American folk music forged ground for contemporary singer-songwriters like Wilco, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Listen to modern voices sing songs of childhood, love, loss, hard times, protest, and working folk.

  • Princeton music top 40

As a child of the 70s I looked forward to Casey Kasem's weekly (and cheesy) countdown of the top 40 hits of the nation. Flash forward a few decades and here I am: in charge of purchasing the music for this spectacular library. Today I get to be Casey and count down the most popular CDs in our collection...but not just for this week, for all time!

Looking forward to the Children's Book Festival

It’s that time of the year again. No, I’m not referring to the end of summer reading clubs or the kids heading back to school. I’m talking about Book Festival time. On Saturday, September 8, 2012 Princeton Public Library is proud to host our 7th Annual Princeton Children’s Book Festival. For those of you who are Festival followers, we’ve got a lot in store for you this year. Yes, it does get bigger and better every year.

    The lives we lead

My favorite kind of read is a good memoir and I just finished two that I wanted to share.  Although they have the same witty writing style, the lives described are so far apart it is hard to imagine they are from the same person, Josh Kilmer-Purcell of the reality television show, The Fabulous Beekman Boys, aka Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge.

Olympian Lesley Bush shares gold at library

I've blogged previously about terrific customer interactions while staffing the Welcome Desk and have another to share. On Monday evening, while a colleague, Erica Bess was answering questions, she had the great opportunity to meet Olympic Gold Medalist, Lesley Bush, who won her gold medal in 1964 at the Tokyo games for platform diving. The bonus was that  Bush had the coveted first place medal with her! Thrilled to be in the right place at the right time, several staff members had the opportunity to chat with Bush about her experience and to hold the medal.

    E-reader style

Over the last couple of weeks you may have seen people in the library or walking around town with red Princeton Public Library bags. “What are these cute, little bags?” you ask yourself, “What is the library up to now?” These red bags are the brand new carrying cases for our e-readers. Those of you who have checked out an e-reader with us before will remember the bulky plastic boxes in which they came. They are now being replaced with our easy-to-carry, compact, and convenient e-reader bags.
