    Window shopping

Not sure what to get your bibliophile friend or relative for the holidays? How about a beautiful book? The coffee table tomes listed below are designed to be savored and look best in traditional paper. The sheer size and details of the illustrations are too much for most tablets or e-readers. If you want to test drive one of these before purchasing I suggest you check out our big books table in New Nonfiction area on the first floor of the library. You can see the table from one of our windows facing Witherspoon Street.

    And the winner is...

November doesn’t just bring beautiful fall colors, crisp air and the celebration of Thanksgiving, it also brings the National Book Awards. Each year, the anticipation grows as the long list of contenders is announced - and it certainly is a long list. There are several categories: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and young people’s literature which includes both children’s and young adult titles.

    Staff spotlight: Manny Diaz

In a revival of our once-popular "Get to Know Us" blog posts, I caught up with Princeton Public Library building monitor Manny Diaz for an interview. Manny works part time making sure the building, staff, and customers are safe. If you visit the library during the evening or on the weekend you've probably seen him around!

Q: How long have you worked at PPL?
    MD: Going on eight years.

    2013 Staff picks in pictures

What is the best book you've read this year? Need to refresh your memory? The lists are beginning to roll out. Additionally, there are always the award winners. In the land of fiction,  "Good Lord Bird" by James McBride (our second Princeton Reads author, circa 2006) is this year's National Book Award winner.

  • Free birds, a.k.a. Vegetarian Thanksgiving

I often hear people talking about that one Thanksgiving guest who is “a vegetarian," and the question surfaces, “What can I serve him?”  If you think about it, though, after the roast beast, most of the other dishes are actually vegetarian and vegan, because after all, it is a celebration of the harvest, and of families, and friends coming together. The roast beast is ‘kind of’ extra.

    Get the lowdown on downloading

Downloading eBooks is like riding a bike. It takes a lot of practice to get going, but once you do, you never look back. Because it can be a tricky process to learn and many people look to the library for assistance (which we encourage!), we offer classes to download eBooks, audiobooks and magazines. In the past, these classes had been challenging to personalize, with two staff members assisting up to ten individuals at a time, each with a different type of mobile device and in need of customized downloading instructions.

  • What are they doing in there?

What are they doing in there?

On Veterans Day, Princeton Public Library was closed, but staff did not have the day off. If you walked through Hinds Plaza during the daylight hours on Monday, you may have noticed a fully occupied Community Room. What were library staff members doing while they weren’t checking out and checking in materials, cataloging and ordering for the collection, fielding questions, and helping with computers? It’s no big secret, just our annual Staff Development Day.

Stealing books never looked so good

Have you seen the trailer for "The Book Thief" yet? This highly-anticipated film adaptation of Markus Zusak's novel, starring Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson, will be released on November 15th and has already received a torrent of praise and Oscar buzz.

Chocolate chip or something more exciting

For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed baking a variety of different sweets and candies. Above all I enjoy baking and eating cookies. Nothing, in my opinion, beats a warm cookie. They can be one of the easiest and quickest deserts to make while being delectably irresistible.

    Landing Q

When the committee that decides such things was discussing the next Princeton Reads book and the idea of “The Silver Linings Playbook” was floated, we were all intrigued. The committee thought this book had the potential to spark a community-wide discussion of little-discussed mental health issues, particularly stigma.
