Princeton 2012 top 40
In my last post I counted down the top 40 music CDs for ALL TIME here at the library. These CDs had the highest circulation since we started counting with our current system way back in 1999. The list was interesting but also skewed towards music we have been owned for years as more time to circulate often leads to higher circulation numbers. I promised to do another list based just on circulation for 2012 and here it is!
As you can see it is a totally different animal. There's a lot more pop and rock (indie and classic) and a lot less classical and jazz. If you are at all curious about what Princeton wants to hear right now read on.

Interesting that the all-time list includes three jazz albums, two Broadway soundtracks and a classical (choral) album in the Top 10, while the Top 10 in this 2012 list appears to be all pop music. I wonder if this reflects a shift in the listening habits of library customer or a change in the library's purchasing patterns. Then again, it could be that there are simply fewer new jazz and classical releases from which to choose. The real takeaway here is that Princeton Public Library's music collection is great, and is consistently getting better. For instance, the library's collection contains nearly every one of this guy's Top 25 Jazz Albums of All Time. Similarly, the collection of works by 20th century classical composers is very strong. Nice work by all.
